I am NOT going out and buying new cartiges because the static charge buildup is a known recurring problem with this printer and fries the chip on the cartidges. Let it sit 24 hours so any excess static charge will dissipate. One suggestion was to unplug from the computer and the electrical source. Running the printer can place static charges on the chips. There is a problem with the chips Epson places in the cartridges. The printer will not allow me to print and there is no override for this! Although, if shaken gently there is plenty of ink. I took them all out, cleaned the contact with alcohol, placed them back in. Next day, all of the cartridges register as EMPTY.

Ink cartridges register as about 90% full one day. I bought this printer and it printed 4, 8x10 pictures very nicely. If anyone knows a good alternate, let me know! Also, half the time it doesn't even turn on right, it says its out of ink when I just replaced it, the ink that comes from Epson always has a faulty color so you have to call them, have them tell you to shake the ink cartridge nine times before they'll send you a new one and then, you have to wait for the new one! Unbelievable!! I hate having to create dvds because it means I have to spend an entire afternoon working with this printer - trying to get it to work and turn on and recognize that it has ink. the printer is awful even when it's doing a good job. I've wasted so many printable dvds over printing, seeing lines or weird coloration, I'll clean the nozzle which wastes a ton of ink and then I'll print with no lines but really, no saturation or contrast. I have to do a nozzle cleaning every time I print. I write reviews on the biggest curve, if I give a bad review, its because its REALLY bad - usually I just keep my mouth shut.

If you're into cool electronic gadgets that require regular troubleshooting (like most Windows users), this is your printer! The R280 is by far the BEST VALUE for a home-use CD/DVD print system I have found, assuming you can get it to work. There's no reason to think that the unit won't flip out again, but if the system reset works reliably, then I would say this is worth it. I called Epson support (the number for R280 support is in the back of the manual) and they had me unplug, restore the trays to normal printing position, then plug in and hold down the Power and Paper Out buttons simultaneously for 6 seconds to power on. Fool me once! So I read through the manual, tried various fixes, nothing worked. Then it said another cartridge was empty.

The software said my new ink cartrige was empty, and wouldn't relent until I actually broke out a new cartridge. The ink cartridge carriage whizzed around and sounded like it was printing on nothing. I got this unit set up, printed a test page, a very good photo, and 3 very good DVDs using the included Epson Print CD software, then the next time I powered on all 3 panel lights started flashing.
